Exhibition University of Mannheim

Afghanistan is without a doubt one of the worst places in the world for a child to be born into. And in the mountainous province of Badakhshan, in the remote northeast of the country, the situation is particularly bleak: on average, for every one thousand live births, 252 of the children there will die before they reach the age of five, giving the region the dubious honour of having the highest infant mortality rate on the planet.

10 Jahre nach der Unterzeichnung der UN Millenniumserklärung durch 189 UN-Mitgliedsstaaten reiste Steffen Diemer mehrfach zu einer Bestandsaufnahme in die Bergregion der Provinz Badakhshan in Afghanistan. Er will wissen, wie erfolgreich die Vereinten Nationen und entsprechende Hilfsorganisationen hier im äußersten Nordosten des Entwicklungslandes die Armut bekämpft, die Kindersterblichkeit gesenkt und die Gesundheitsvorsorge der Mütter verbessert haben - das sind drei der insgesamt acht Millenniumsziele. Steffen Diemer dokumentiert den Status Quo in 30 faszinierenden Fotos. Fotografiert mit einer Leica S2 zeigen uns diese Bilder eine einzigartige Dynamik und Detailreichtum. Es sind außergewöhnliche und ausdrucksstarke Dokumente entstanden. Sie sind herzlich eingeladen, aktuelle Geschichte zu erleben.
